Foxconn and RIM plan investments in Malaysia

Foxconn and Research In Motion have expressed interest to invest in Malaysia

Foxconn Technology Group, world famous for making iPhones and iPads for Apple Inc has been rumoured to have received an investment license to operate in Kulai, a town in the southern Malaysian state of Johor, according to news reports in Taiwan.

The Taiwanese company is the world's largest maker of electronic components including printed circuit boards. It is the largest exporter and largest private employer in Mainland China.

Meanwhile, Canada's Research In Motion Limited, the company behind BlackBerry smartphones are planning to invest in setting up its own manufacturing plant either in Penang, Malaysia or in Indonesia.

In the meantime, since July 2011, the company has begun its Malaysian production via a third party plant owned by Flextronics in Penang.

Singapore-headquartered Flextronics International is one of RIM's largest supplier partner. Flextronics has at least 6 plants in Malaysia.

Despite the gloomy global economy, Asia will lead growth with China, Indonesia and India leading other Asian trading nations.

Malaysia alone aims to achieve US$10 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows this year. If achieved, it will be the highest ever recorded topping last year's US$9.1 billion.

AFTER signing up W by Starwood Hotels several weeks ago, Kuala Lumpur looks set to sign up yet another luxury brand in hospitality.

PATCHAY.COM finds out this week that Kuala Lumpur has been chosen for an upcoming 5-star Banyan Tree Signatures.

The new Banyan Tree will be built at the site of the former MISC Building at Jalan Conlay, which was last used as The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus between 2000 and 2005.

Since last year, the building has been demolished and the site has been cleared in preparation for construction of this project.

The 55-storey single tower is a mixed development consisting of 441 units of Private Residences, 51 units of Service Residences and 50 luxury suites that will be managed by Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts.

According to sources, the average price for 'Private Residences' units could reach RM2,000 per square feet and beyond, potentially outstripping OneKL and The Troika in KLCC to become the most expensive apartments in KL.

Real estate consultants have told PATCHAY.COM that despite the project not located within the KLCC prestigious address, its location is still its most attractive selling point as it is just across the road from Pavilion KL and Bukit Bintang.

As such the development will be linked to Pavilion KL shopping mall via a private pedestrian bridge, and the tower itself would boost facilities such as a skybar and a sky-restaurant at the tower roof top, and the signature Banyan Tree Gallery and Spa.

The location of this development is also within walking distance to the piece of land that was transacted last year at RM7,210 per square feet. The tract near to Pavilion's grand entrance is the most expensive land in Malaysia till today. The land was purchased by principals behind Pavilion KL.

A most recent newsreport indicated that Pavilion KL may seek for a REIT listing on Bursa Malaysia. Fahrenheit 88, a newly refurbished mall opposite Pavilion KL and managed by Pavilion KL, may be injected into the REIT at a later stage.

Market rumour is that the owners of Pavilion KL may continue to expand its asset via strategic developments such as Banyan Tree and acquisition of land in close proximity.

The hospitality industry remained robust with several international hotel brands coming up in the Klang Valley, and the list includes Pullman Kuala Lumpur at Bangsar; Grand Hyatt at KLCC; W Hotel & Residences at Jalan Ampang; St. Regis Hotel & Residences and aloft Hotel at KL Sentral; Best Western Dua Sentral and the Ascott Sentral, both at KL Sentral; Movenpick Hotel & Convention Centre at KL International Airport; and Hilton Garden Inn in Millennia City Puchong.

PATCHAY.COM checks out this week the latest status of the proposed RM26 billion KL International Financial District (KLIFD).

It was earlier reported in the media that if everything goes well, KLIFD may groundbreak as early as June 2011 in conjunction with the visit of the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi to Malaysia.

According to 1MDB's website, the masterplan competition has attracted some of the world’s best.

They include Foster + Partners, Sasaki, BDP, Machado and Silvetti, Broadway Malyan, Atkins, Cox Richardson, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill, Nikken Sekkei Ltd and OMA.

Further, it was stated that 1MDB will announce the winner soon.

But details of the megaproject remained sketchy given the recent unrest in the Middle East and the high oil prices that have forced governments around the world to revise their economic growth.

Sorry folks, I can only recall JAM, JAM, JAM and IOI Mall.

Lately, PATCHAY.COM was on tour in Puchong as we were invited for a Facebook launch of a property agency in conjunction with the launch of a new property project.

Along the way, we came to a rather large-sized hawker shack entitled "PUCHONG YONG TAU FU".

Stunning!!

We've found the legendary "freshest" yong tau foo in town. And like all legends, the place was busy, noisy and packed with people.

The Cantonese would say "WONG" (prosperous), and I immediately presumed this must be another good lunch for us.

Then the rain came, and the place somewhat seemed abit chaotic like any other hawker centres.

You can't start the yong tau foo stuffs until you have tried the Ji Pau Kai (Paper-Wrapped Chicken).

It was salty enough but the sauce was abit too much to have caused the wrapper to stick with the meat.

Overall, the chicken meat was tasty, but I would not rate it the best in Klang Valley.

Next was the yong tau foo soup version. Interestingly, the soup was compulsorily served with leafy vegetables unlike other places.

Our portion was pretty big as we have ordered almost the entire range. So be careful next time!

Overall the yong tau foo was very fresh, well-stuffed and well cooked. The reason being the yong tau foo were prepared as per your order, great!

However, and as expected, the soup was bland.

This was followed by yong tau foo deep fried version. The crisp of the tau foo pok is probably the best part here.

The usual black sauce and chilli sauce was provided generously, but somehow it tasted quite normal like other outlets. I think they could still improve on the sauce.

The best thing about this place is that you are able to choose exactly what you want, unlike some other places.

And finally, what is shocking here is that most people eat yong tau foo with WHITE RICE, except us. :p

IKEA to open 2nd Malaysian store

PATCHAY.COM has confirmed the opening of IKEA's 2nd Malaysian store in Kuala Lumpur.

This comes a week after franchise holder and Singapore-based Ikano Retail Asia confirmed the opening of Thailand's first IKEA store later this year and a proposed plan for second and third Thai outlets within the next 5 years.

Similarly and subsequently, IKEA has confirmed the opening of its second store in Kuala Lumpur by 2013 and third store at Johor Bahru, Malaysia's second largest city, within the next few years.

It was further speculated that a fourth store will be in Penang.

The second Kuala Lumpur store will be built within the redevelopment of government quarters in Jalan Cochrane. Work is expected to start soon once after the civil servants residing there vacate their homes by June 2011.

Back in 2000, Boustead Group developed its jewel township Mutiara Damansara by bringing in IKEA's first megastore in Asia and building Ikano Power Centre (now renamed as IPC Shopping Centre) adjacent to it.

It was reported that 1Malaysia Development Board (1MDB), the land owner of the government quarters in Jalan Cochrane has awarded Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT) to build apartments for government servants in the said area. Interestingly, LTAT is the single largest shareholder of the Boustead Group.

This time the IKEA store will be connected to a proposed integrated development which will also feature a shopping mall, serviced apartments, a hotel and the proposed underground MRT station.

The proposed integrated development will be undertaken as a joint venture with IKEA's local franchisor, Ikano Corp Sdn Bhd.

In 2010, it was reported that Malaysia was looking to build two 1,000 megawatt nuclear power plants by 2022 to counter an "imbalance" in its energy supplies.

Today Japan, a proud nation with over 60 years of experience in nuclear power, is on the brink of a radiation leakage (that could lead to a nuclear disaster) following a 8.9 magnitude earthquake-cum-mega-tsunami.

Before the disaster, the Malaysian Government has agreed in principle to venture into nuclear power and radioactive-enrichment technology with the setting up of Malaysia Nuclear Power Corporation under its Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) announced in January 2011.

An over-dependence and diminishing supply of coal and natural gas are some of the main reasons cited for deploying alternative source of power such as nuclear.

Electricity is heavily subsidised in Malaysia, thus a viable source of energy is vital to meet its growing energy needs and to fulfil its 'predicted' reputation as a developed nation by 2020.

PATCHAY.COM finds out this week that 3 of the Biggest Names in the Internet world have finally, officially landed on our shores!

Last month, Google opened its 2nd Southeast Asian office at the Petronas Twin Towers. For now, the Google Malaysia office will focus in business development and marketing of local content of its web services.

Next time, I just can't imagine people shouting at me: "Open up, quickly open up the Google Rojak web browser!"

Next, the world's largest online payment company PayPal will open its 2nd operations hub in Asia in the suburban Bandar Utama just outside of Kuala Lumpur.

The eBay company plans to hire over 300 ~~ah longs~~ employees for its new customer support centre.

Meanwhile, global phenomenal Facebook Inc has "secretly" began operations in suburban Damansara Perdana just next to Bandar Utama.

Perhaps, this comes after Facebook's acquisition of Octazen, a Malaysian-based company with 2 owners. The new Malaysian office has also been confirmed on Facebook press website.

Amongst global software companies that already have presence here include Microsoft, Oracle, SAP and Symantec.

On a smaller scale, Apple Inc and McAfee also have offices in Kuala Lumpur.

Definitely I won't be surprise to see Skype, Twitter, Foursquare and Research In Motion next...

- Malaysia's largest megaproject and first Mass Rapit Transit (MRT) project.

- The Greater KL MRT Project is one of the key initiative identified under the government's Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).

- Project Delivery Partner (project manager) awarded to MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn Bhd.

- Project owner is Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd.

- Project regulator and licensing authority is Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).

- The Sg Buloh-Kajang MRT Line is the first of at least 3 MRT lines being planned, with a total length of 150km.

- Estimated total costs of three MRT lines is at least RM36.6 billion.

- The first phase is scheduled for ground breaking in July 2011 and fully operational by 2016.

- The whole MRT project is expected to create 130,000 jobs.

- The implementation is expected to generate Gross National Income of between RM3 billion and RM4 billion beginning 2011 until 2020.

- By 2020, the MRT is expected to carry 2 million riders, serving over 11% of total travel across Klang Valley and 64% of travel in and out of KL City Centre.

AirAsia X flying to Christchurch, New Zealand

Kuala Lumpur-based AirAsia X has announced that it will begin service to Christchurch, the largest city in the beautiful South Island of New Zealand.

No date has been confirmed but the contract has been signed by both sides.

AirAsia X continues to lobby the Malaysian Government for approval to fly to Sydney after the government decided against ending flagship carrier Malaysia Airlines' monopoly on that route.

AirAsia X begins flights to Seoul (Incheon) tomorrow.

Besides Christchurch, AirAsia X is expected to announce several new destinations in the next few months. They are predicted to be:

Q: Do we need so many buildings?

PATCHAY.COM finds out this week some of the most interesting planned/visionised skyscrapers and urban centres in downtown Kuala Lumpur.

We have decided to include several artistic renderings, but these may not be an accurate representation of the final concept.

Architecturally inspired. These supertall buildings were planned to change KL skyline. Three out of six have started and they are: Lot C KLCC, Ilham Baru Tower, both Felda and Naza Towers at Platinum Park KLCC.

It was estimated that more than a dozen skyscrapers (hotels, commercial and residential) will be completing soon within the next 6 months.

For offices, there'll be an additional 3 million of space coming into the market in 2011.

In fact, this is in tandem with the overall expected economic growth and business expansion of corporations. And for most parts of Asia, the trend seems to show similar robust in both the construction and property industry.

The Petronas Twin Towers has had close to 100% occupancy rate for several years (might have dropped in recent months due to lease renewals). This has prompted its owner, KLCC Holdings to construct a new 59-storey building next to the Twin Towers for Petronas' expansion plans.

Sooner or later, someone will propose to build another tall and iconic landmark. Like other Asian cities, the rise of skyscrapers is a symbol of prosperity and wealth of the nation and the upper class society.

Cesar Pelli, the Twin Tower designer will be designing another landmark next to it. The project will start in 2011.

It is widely believed that despite the higher-than-expected occupancy rate, average rentals per square feet for both commercial and residential continue to fall due to competition from new supplies and higher requirements by tenants.

Selected tenants who can afford higher rentals have continued to be much sought after, but the intense competition have forced owners to offer better deals and an option to upgrade based on the needs of their tenant.

It is worth noting that the demand for GREEN buildings is growing fast and unfortunately, many buildings in KL would not satisfy this requirement.

Besides Warisan Merdeka, PNB plans to redevelop former MAS Building, also in 2011.

Megaprojects should be carried out in the most transparent manner as it may involve a huge amount of public-sourced funds, either directly or indirectly. Transparency and accountability are the key points.

Besides KL, Petaling Jaya is fast catching up with privately-funded megaprojects. But the developer will be PKNS, a state-owned agency, that is now planning to create a niche in integrated mixed development.

Patchay.Com firmly believes that megaprojects are not the only option to kickstart a stagnant economy that was prevailing from previous years.

Megaprojects are needed as well, but not to the extent of de-prioritising other pressing needs such as funding for a good public transportation system, not just rail, but also busses.

Current planned, proposed and under-construction towers in KL alone. Like other Asian cities, the rise of skyscrapers is a symbol of prosperity and wealth.

Lastly, despite having provided for a RM40 billion MRT system Patchay.Com believes what is more important is to speed-up its implementation by reducing "systemic" bureaucracy and to integrate with existing infrastructure.

"For the benefit of all, a really large economic impact is akin to building 5 lines of MRT, not as compared to building a 100-storey building."

Warisan Merdeka: An Egoism Come True?

The sky was getting dark with heavy moisture, yet it was eerily calm.

It was back in 2011, the guardians of the Land had decided to erect a 5 billion ringgit towering altar of more than 500m.

One that would rise above the plains of the legendary Victoria Institution.

By 2015, Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) plans to build a 100-storey tower within Warisan Merdeka, next to Stadium Merdeka. The urban rejuvenation area would be something like a new KLCC.

Many observers believed that the tower is expected to house an "all-in-one", consisting of hotel rooms, apartments, suites, offices, retail and tourist facilities.

The guardians of the Land had wanted to centralised its idealistic imagination right in the heart of the Land, in preparation for a "globalisation" invasion.

Now a Malaysian Chinese hawker in Pandamaran, Klang is gonna give a good challenge to KFC.

Besides Bak Kut Teh, Klang is now home to "Selangor's Best Homemade Fried Chicken", as what many of its customers had claimed in the Internet world.

Patchay.Com made a visit somewhere in September and found out that the fried chicken is pretty good.

Total score: 70/100, in comparison to KFC Damansara Jaya: 85/100, which received higher points simply for ambience.

And instead of having Pepsi that comes with it at KFC, here you'll find ice-blended hawker drinks, in particular the longan mata kucing.

KL's RM26 billion New Financial District

Alot of people have been asking me to share something about the new Kuala Lumpur International Financial District.

All I have is to show you the below pictures for now.

Well, the new Kuala Lumpur, or rather KLIFD (sometimes called 1Malaysia Financial Centre) is a RM26 billion project that will be built from the middle of next year (2011), as reported in the media recently.

Secondly, this project is often mistaken with the proposed development of Sg. Besi Airport, which was also envisioned to become another Financial Centre, or rather an Islamic Financial Centre.

I say KLIFD is not Sg. Besi.

This project is situated on a 34.4 hectares of land near Jalan Tun Razak and Bulatan Pandan (SMART Tunnel).

This project is being developed by 1Malaysia Development Board, undeniably which has some links to Jho Low, the young chap who partied with Paris Hilton, etc.

In fact, KLIFD is not something new to us. The development was previously known as "Dataran Perdana" which is synonymous with the development of Pudu's Pasarakyat Bus Terminal.

Finally, I was told that two lines of the proposed MRT for Greater KL will inter-changed at this new urban area. And I read somewhere someone suggested Bursa Malaysia to move its office to here. LOL

Monash to build tallest campus in KL Sentral?

Melbourne-based Monash University may set up another Malaysian campus, this time in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city.

Presenting in KL Sentral, what is set to be Malaysia's tallest and most iconic school development.

The artistic rendering showed two 48-storey school-cum-residences tower being located just next to Kuala Lumpur's Sentral station, Malaysia's premier transportation and commercial hub.

The authenticity of the proposed project has not been verified, but it is believed to house Monash University's Faculty of Architecture (School of Arts & Design).

Monash currently has 6 academic schools at its suburban Sunway campus.

The iconic twin-tower structure features a sky-park sandwiched in between and acting as a connector between the two structures.

The sky-park will feature swimming pool, gym and a students' cafeteria.

Penang-KL-Singapore Bullet Train?

One of the so-called economic marvels at the Economic Transformation Programme Exhibition (ETP) is the high-speed train (either a bullet one or Maglev) from Penang to KL then to Singapore.

The proposed high speed train will definitely bring Penangites plus KLites much closer to the casino resorts of Singapore...

...and my female friends much closer to the ~~waste~~ spend money paradise of Orchard Road.

Also, a very good news for my neighbourhood's aunties.

Going to Resorts World Sentosa in about 2 hours+ will be as short as going for a full body massage!

In 2007, YTL Corp had proposed a bullet train from KL to Singapore.

Singaporeans too can now come to Penang or KL to find unhealthy-cum-delicious mamak food as regular as once a week.

And probably they can buy more pirated DVDs from Petaling Street too. LOL =)

KLIA 2 The Next Generation Hub

KLIA 2 is slated to be ready by April 2012 and with 242,000 sq metre of space it would be the largest purpose-built dedicated terminal for low-cost carriers in the world. The terminal will also have a significant area for shopping and dining.

The 2.5 billion ringgit KLIA 2 will feature Asia's first pedestrian skybridge in an airport. The skybridge will connect the international pier and the domestic pier.

KLIA 2 is located 2km away from KLIA Main Terminal Building and could accommodate up to 30-35 million passengers annually, and with future expansion, could handle up to 45 million passengers a year.

It has a total of 68 boarding gates, most of which will be serving its anchor tenant, that is the AirAsia Group.

By end of 2013, the AirAsia Group is expected to have a fleet of more than 180 planes.

The widely debated aerobridge feature is still pending negotiations between Malaysia Airports and AirAsia, and there is no confirmation whether there would be an aerotrain link between KLIA and KLIA 2.

KLIA 2 would have an integrated transport hub, connecting various modes of transportation such as taxis and buses. It will also be linked by an Express Rail Link extension line, besides a possible link to the nearest KTM.

Other facilities include a semi-automated baggage handling system, support zones, cargo and inflight complexes, a 6,000-vehicle parking complex, a hotel (possibly a new Tune Hotel) and AirAsia's future headquarters.

The Future of Damansara Uptown

Finally, my hometown of Damansara Utama is getting ready for a much needed makeover.

Developer, See Hoy Chan, is finalising details of a new commercial precinct, provisionally known as Damansara Uptown 2.

In the past, it is also believed that several proposals of a new light-rail transit line (LRT), or rather the new mass rapid transit line (MRT), had suggested Damansara Uptown as one of the stop.

According to sources, the development plans of the new Damansara Uptown 2 consist of :-

- 1 block of 6-storey *Luxury* Shopping Mall with convention centre facilities
- 1 block of 20-storey Serviced Apartment
- 1 block of 28-storey Condominium
- 2 blocks of 30-storey Condominium
- 1 block of 43-storey 'Grade A' Office Tower
- 4 levels of Basement Carpark

Despite criticism of bad traffic in that area, the new development is poised to further rejuvenate Damansara Uptown into a bustling and modern commercial centre of Petaling Jaya.

UNIQLO, one of Japan's leading global brands will finally open a store in Kuala Lumpur this fall.

The store will debut as an anchor tenant in the soon-to-be-opened Fahrenheit 88 (previously KL Plaza) right in the heart of Bukit Bintang. With more than 2,140 sqm, the store will occupy three floors of the mall near the main entrance.

This comes after Debenhams of UK opened its flagship 3-floor store in the nearby Lot 10 shopping mall in April of this year.

Petaling Jaya's New Town, otherwise known as PJ State, is set to be transformed into a lively world-class commercial district.

The site of the current headquarters of PKNS, or Selangor State Development Corporation (and the adjacent site of Department of Veterinary) in Section 52 will make way for a RM3 billion integrated development called PJ Sentral Garden City.

The plan is for a mixed development that includes commercial, retail, serviced apartments, hotel and office towers surrounded by gardens and recreational facilities.

According to the master developer Gapurna Group, the aim of this project is to revitalise the ageing Petaling Jaya city centre.

Wehn completed, PJ Sentral Garden City would have three accesses namely from Jalan Barat, Jalan Sultan and Persiaran Barat.

Phase One of the project covers the construction of Office Tower 1 and infrastructure at Lot 8.

Phase Two covers a podium for retail and restaurants, Office Tower 2, 3 and 4 as well as infrastructure on Lot 12.

On Lot 12, under Phase Three, there will be the construction of a business hotel and infrastructure.

Phase Four will see the construction of service apartments, a landscaped central park and related infrastructures — also on Lot 12.

The megaproject — poised to transform the area into Petaling Jaya’s Central Business District (CBD) — is estimated to take up to 10 years to complete.

All buildings planned here are expected to be environment-friendly, with adherence to Green Building Index and other international requirements.

Over the past weeks, traffic congestions and public transportation are amongst the issues raised by residents of nearby neighbourhoods.

It was reported that the developer had also proposed a traffic dispersal system aimed at easing the bottlenecks at Jalan Barat and Jalan Templer, such as new alternate routes linking directly to existing highways such as the Federal Highway and the New Pantai Expressway.

Chong Toong Kee Ipoh Hor Fun

There's apparently a famous shop selling Ipoh Hor Fun and Hainan Chicken Rice in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, so we went to try almost immediately.

It's a simple lunch after a late morning exercise in TTDI's Taman Rimba Kiara.

Ipoh Hor Fun (a choice of dry or wet/soup), plus strips of white chicken, some prawns followed by a thick oyster sauce.

This is the soup version.

Besides our Hor Fun, we ordered a dish of Hainanese Steamed White Chicken, that was quite overwhelmingly soaked in soy sauce.

Damansara Perdana gets HK-styled skyscrapers

Empire Damansara is amongst a host of new enclaves that will further transform the Damansara area.

An integrated mixed development within the Damansara Perdana enclave in Petaling Jaya comprising of Empire Studio (39-storey), two SOHO blocks (27 and 24-storeys), Empire Residence (25-storey), a midrise office tower (12-storey), Empire Detached Offices and road-fronting retail shops.

Site construction has started. Completion in 2013.

As reported by TheStar in March 2010, there are at least 48 more projects (Kota Damansara alone?) coming on stream in the Damansara area.

Bad news for folks like me is that the whole area is gonna be jam like mad!

Could this be a new skyscraper icon for KL?

It has been 12 years since the opening of the Petronas Twin Towers in downtown Kuala Lumpur. So what's next?

Patchay.Com finds out this week that there are already plans to build several iconic buildings around the city centre and the surrounding outskirts of Mont' Kiara and Mid Valley City.

One of them is called "Ilham Baru", or simply IB Tower which will be built adjacent to the glamorous The Troika residences.

Interestingly, world renowned architect Foster+Partners are involved in both projects - Troika and IB, and will be designing another one for the Platinum Park project (where the crane stands on the right side of the picture below).

For now, site clearing is in progress and construction is expected to start soon.

Singapore's Marina Bay Sands opens at 3.18pm today.

Marina Bay Sands, Singapore's second integrated resort-cum-casino, located at downtown Marina Bay, opens its doors to the public for the first time this afternoon.

Marina Bay Sands is built by one of the world's largest gaming company Las Vegas Sands Corp.

Today, it would open the first phase of the resort with 963 out of the planned 2,560 hotel rooms, a portion of its shopping mall, some restaurants and fine dining outlets, the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, the event plaza, nightlife offerings and the Sands Casino.

The rest of the hotel rooms and suites, the 1 hectare sky terrace-on-the-roof known as Sands SkyPark and additional shops would be available as part of the grand opening on June 23.

The Art-Science Museum in the shape of a floating lotus with laser shows at night, Disney's The Lion King @ Marina Bay Sands Theatre, and the remainder of the shops would open towards the end of 2010.

AirAsia X flying to Haneda, Tokyo

Budget Malaysian carrier AirAsia is expected to start its first route to Japan before end of 2010.

Operated by AirAsia X, AirAsia's long-distance affiliate, the flights between Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Tokyo's Haneda Airport will begin at a pace of three times per week.

Currently, flag carrier Malaysian Airlines operate flights to Tokyo via Narita International Airport.

In comparison, Haneda is 14km south of Tokyo Station whereas Narita is 58km east of the same rail terminal.

AirAsia X is also tipped to receive the rights to fly to Seoul and other cities soon. It will officially start flying to Mumbai in May and New Delhi in August.

Meanwhile, short-haul affiliate AirAsia recently announced the establishment of a budget carrier in Vietnam.

Louis Vuitton goes to Mid Valley

Luxury brand Louis Vuitton will be opening its new Malaysian store at The Gardens Mall in Mid Valley City.

Louis Vuitton will expand its presence in Malaysia with the opening of its third store in the country. The store is expected to be opened before Christmas 2010.

The 540 sq metres store will be located at the ground floor of The Gardens Mall.

The opening of Louis Vuitton within Mid Valley City will enhance the retail profile of both Mid Valley Megamall and The Gardens Mall, both of which are interlinked.

In general, the success of the two malls to attract iconic brands will also enhance the value of surrounding real estate. Several new luxury projects are being planned there including the RM6 billion Kuala Lumpur Eco City and a twin tower project within Mid Valley City itself.

The other two Louis Vuitton stores in Malaysia are located at Starhill Gallery along Jalan Bukit Bintang and at Suria KLCC.

Patchay.Com finds out this week how the "permanent" LCCT by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd may look like (Note: unconfirmed final design).

To be located less than 2km west of KLIA Main Terminal, the LCCT will be AirAsia's main hub (Asia's largest no-frills carrier) when completed as early as Q4 of 2011.

The initial handling capacity is targeted at 30 million passengers annually, with the potential to expand to 45 million.

A new runway and an extension of the Express Rail Link (ERL) will also be built to connect the new LCCT and KLIA.

An earlier report suggested that the new terminal will have no aerobridge.

The new LCCT, spread over 150,000 sq metres, would be larger than the Main Terminal with retail and food outlets to ensure passenger comfort.

Singapore plans to build a new waterfront city in Tanjung Pagar as part of its plan to expand the Central Business District.

Singapore's Economic Strategies Committee has revealed future plans to redevelop the port land at Tanjong Pagar, Keppel and Pulau Brani after the port's lease at terminals there expires in 2027.

The future waterfront city will be comparable in size to Marina Bay.

Facebook buys Malaysian company

Internet giant Facebook has acquired a Malaysian-based company

Social networking phenomenal Facebook Inc of Palo Alto, California acquired a relatively unknown Malaysian internet start-up, Octazen Solutions, for an undisclosed sum last week.

According to Facebook, the buyout was a "talent acquisition" which also roped in Octazen's two founding engineers to work with Facebook.

According to website InsideFacebook.Com, Octazen will remain based in Malaysia, making the two engineers the first Facebook employees based in Asia full time.

However, Facebook said, “This won’t become an office… It’s just a talent acquisition and they’ll be considered as remote workers since we’ve opted to let them remain in Malaysia.”

AllFacebook.com, a website that calls itself the unofficial Facebook resource, pointed out on its site last Saturday that Facebook has been working with Octazen for an unknown period of time.

Octazen makes software that helps Facebook grow its user base by encouraging existing members to invite their e-mail contacts.

The fact that Facebook has experienced explosive growth for the past few years was nailed down to Octazen's tool which founder Mark Zuckerberg had said was "the primary source of growth" for its social network.

Facebook has over 400 million users including 250 million added last year, but has been quiet on the acquisition front, preferring to acquire talent rather than products. Octazen is only the third ever acquisition by the company.

According to online websites, the number of Facebook users in Malaysia surpassed the 1 million mark in early March 2009.

The acquisition of Octazen comes as Facebook is fending off a challenge from Google with the launch of the latter’s Buzz social network.

The underground hall leading towards the casino is magnificent.

The much anticipated Festive Walk retail mall is still closed for construction works.

Amongst stores that you can expect are those you could easily find on Orchard Road such as Bvlgari, Chanel, Coach, Tod's and Ralph Lauren.

There is also Asia's first Victoria's Street BRA store.

Singapore's first Hard Rock Hotel has a nice man-made beach and lagoon. Its Rang Mahal Restaurant looks quite exclusive.

KL will unveil its latest high-end shopping mall in August 2010... and around two dozen more malls are coming around !!!

Fahrenheit 88, the former KL Plaza is set to open its doors in the third quarter of this year. It will offer a new retail experience to complement the shopping belt of Jalan Bukit Bintang.

The newly makeover 5-storey shopping mall is expected to house over 200 tenants, most of which will be the hippest, trendiest and most classy couture, information technology and F&B outlets in Kuala Lumpur.

Plans are underway to bring in several international luxury brands into the mall.

The shopping mall is now co-owned and co-managed by Pavilion KL, a world-class shopping mall just across the road.

When I was 21

I did 21 things when I was 21.

I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting and Finance.

I invented spaghetti bolognese (beef) with sliced bacon. Trust me, this is not too bad.

Overall, my cooking skills went up and came down, and then I stopped altogether ever since I came home.

I watched one of the world's largest fireworks in Sydney. Close to 1 million people witnessed the spectacular and in terms of turnout it was probably larger than the one in New York City (due to economic crisis?).

I did my first ever forest hiking at Blue Mountains National Park. The local breeze vanished the summer heat from my memory - as it was raining throughout the return journey and I was soaking wet.

I experienced 48C heat wave in South Australia. Despite the sweltering condition, I was touring Adelaide City all by foot because the public transport was suspended for a few days.

I was on the flight 5 times within a period of 4 weeks. With AirAsia, I hope I could fly more often and longer distance this coming year.

I packed and left Brisbane for good. It was a difficult decision for me but I had not much choice but to seek my career back home.

I made Singapore my second home. Most of family members had moved southwards to Singapore and it was obvious for me to be somewhere near them.

I became an uncle for the third time. Everybody say Hi to little Sam!

I shopped alone in an almost abandoned mall. It was not surprising, as much as I wanted to explore the hidden secrets there that is probably the four seasons Quattro club.

I video-conferenced in Bloomberg. Surrounded by sophisticated equipments and being hosted by Mr Adrian Valenzuela, it was most unfortunate that I did not appear on "Bloomberg Live" with Haslinda Amin (lol).

I attended fifteen "BIG" graduate interviews during this time of economic crisis. Met many great people along the way.

I visited a farm for the first time. My agricultural working visit included a large feedmill, a modern broiler house (chicken farm), slaughtering factory and a giant freezer room.

I learnt that the chickens sold in Tesco were well fed but may not be fresh all the time.

Crazy or romantic? Hubby slept with wife's corpse

A heartbroken husband pining for his dead wife dug up her corpse and slept beside it for 5 years

Le Van said he opened the grave because he wanted to HUG her.

The 55-year-old, from a small town in the central province of Quang Nam, Vietnam, moulded clay around the remains to give the figure of a woman.

He then put clothes on her and placed her in his bed.

Van came up with the idea after his children stopped him from digging a tunnel into the grave.

After his wife died in 2003 he slept on top of her burial plot for 20 months.

But worried about rain, wind and cold, he eventually decided to dig the underground passage "to sleep with her".

His kids found out and prevented him from going to the grave.

So one night in November 2004 he dug up his wife's remains and took them home.

The father of seven said neighbours did not dare visit the house for several years.

He said: "I'm a person that does things differently. I'm not like normal people."

Baby born on AirAsia flight

A baby boy arrived unexpectedly on board an AirAsia flight

Gave birth above 2,000 feet

Flight AK5606 was on its way to Kuching but had to be re-routed to the low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in Sepang, 30 minutes after the aircraft left Bayan Lepas Airport in Penang.

Liew Siaw Hsia, a 31-year-old waitress from Taiping, took the flight last night when she was just 27 weeks pregnant, a week shy of the recommended travel ban for pregnant mothers.

When she boarded the flight, she said that there was already some discomfort. But 20 minutes into the journey, she started feeling contractions.

Edd Razhe, the personal assistant to the AirAsia chairman, said when the pilot was informed of the emergency, he contacted the control tower requesting a diversion to the LCCT.

"When I started feeling a lot of pain, I was still too nervous to ask for assistance. It was when I couldn't take it anymore that I asked the passenger beside me for help," said Liew.

She said that the flight attendants tried to calm her down and to hold on from giving birth, but the pain was too unbearable.

"They immediately asked the other passengers sitting around me to move elsewhere, and asked for a doctor on the PA system," she said.

On the flight was Dr Ronald Tang, another passenger, who quickly volunteered his services to the nervous mother while the cabin crew held her hand throughout the entire ordeal.

The healthy baby was safely delivered in mid-air. He became the first born in an AirAsia aircraft.

As soon as the aircraft landed, a waiting ambulance and paramedics whisked the baby and mother to the Putrajaya Hospital.

Edd said although it was an emergency, situation in the aircraft was normal and under control.

AirAsia director of operations Moses Devanayagam visited the mother and child yesterday to congratulate them.

"I would like to congratulate Liew and wish her all the best of luck.

"Delivering a baby at 2,000 feet is indeed a very rare experience, and certainly she will cherish the moment forever," he said.

AirAsia chief Datuk Tony Fernandes, who is in Bangkok flown back to Kuala Lumpur to celebrate the arrival of the baby at the hospital.

AirAsia has announced that it will provide a lifetime of free flights to both Liew and her son to all (AirAsia) destinations.

Future LRT and MRT in KL

Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (SPNB), the state-owned public transport operator, plans to spend up to RM7 billion to extend 2 light rail transit (LRT) lines in Kuala Lumpur.

The 2 extension lines will cover a total of 34.7km and is due to start early 2010 and fully completed by end of 2012.

In line with the extension of LRT lines, SPNB will also embark on fleet expansion.

It was also reported that the Kota Damansara - Cheras Line will begin construction as early as 2011 and completing in 2014.

1. KELANA JAYA LINE EXTENSION (formerly PUTRA)

Current average daily passenger volume is 180,000.
The preferred alignment will begin from the Kelana Jaya station,
passing through 13 new stations,

including an interchange with Subang Jaya KTM commuter station,
before ending at Putra Heights interchange with Ampang/Sri Petaling Line
covering a total of 17km.

Fleet expansion: 35 more train sets of 4 cars per set configuration.

2. AMPANG/SERI PETALING LINE EXTENSION (formerly STAR)

Current average daily passenger volume is 170,000.
The preferred alignment will begin from the Sri Petaling station,
passing through 13 new stations,

before ending at Putra Heights interchange with Kelana Jaya Line,
covering a total of 17.7km.

Fleet expansion: 13 more train sets of 6 cars per set configuration.

3. KOTA DAMANSARA - CHERAS NEW MRT LINE

The proposed new LRT line from Kota Damansara to Cheras, measuring 42km, will be upgraded to a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system because of high population density.
A possible extension from Kota Damansara to Sungai Buloh KTM.

The proposed alignment showed the new line running from Kota Damansara along Persiaran Surian to the Damansara-Puchong Expressway and then heading towards the city centre along the Sprint Expressway, through Bangsar Baru and Jalan Bangsar.

It will then run parallel to the existing Kelana Jaya Line to Nu Sentral in KL Sentral, then Pasar Seni and Masjid Jamek before heading to the Golden Triangle along Jalan Raja Chulan.

The route will then pass Pasar Rakyat in Bukit Bintang and then Jalan Tun Razak where it will join Jalan Cheras.

It will continue along the road and the Cheras-Kajang Expressway to the Balakong interchange near Cheras Batu 11.

There will be around 30 stations along the line, including a few interchange stations. Below is an indication of the proposed alignment:

Ion Orchard vs Orchard Central

I was sooo freaking busy lately... but anyway I was in Singapore chillin out at Ion Orchard and Orchard Central over the Merdeka weekend.

Ion Orchard is like Singapore's response to KL's Pavilion. Very nice facade but the interior is simply too small, low ceiling, cramped and congested, especially the food court during office hours.

The Louis Vuitton there is amongst the best retail store I've ever seen. It is also the largest LV boutique in Southeast Asia.

Orchard Central has a hippie decor but the mall is still quite vacant. The outdoor escalator overlooking Orchard skyline is quite cool.

I was quite disappointed with the stores in Orchard Central especially the small small ones that look like stores in pasar malam, except these ones selling expensive goods. The 10 floors just failed to excite my shopping/dining, for that I would choose Ion Orchard.

In Singapore, a woman was seen stopping by the road and then aggresively hitting his male partner with her high-heel shoe in his face and private part for many times.

He did not retaliate throughout the assault at all! (I feel sorry for him)
