Hello Brisbane

27 March, 2007 | Written by Patchay at 11:32 PM in ,

Good day everyone... I'm BACK !!! It's time for Me to BLOG again ...

One exam down, two more to go by end of this month, but of course both will be after Easter. Haha pray hard for Me during that time ok?

So recently I went down to the city of Brisbane and took some pictures. Brisbane dowtown is just 20 minutes from where I live.

My bus 412 arriving at George Street. Just across the road is Queen Street, which is the city's No.1 shopping place.

Blocks and blocks of shopping centres lined up together, just like Bukit Bintang in KL or Orchard Road in Singapore.

I was wondering why do they need to put speakers and audio system up like this? Worst still they aren't playing any music for Me haha. But this is a very good place to go chill out.

I'm now standing right in the heart of Brisbane. That's an ancient cathedral with some modern buildings in the background.

It's quite easy to get around as the city centre is only made up of a few major streets.

I love to shop here !!! Louis Vuitton here could be cheaper than back home in KL. But sorry-lah, I have no money for these things liao ...

Food is abundance everywhere, and so I sat down to have a drink. Looking at people strolling here and there is a good thing to do next.

Time passes so fast. Shops close at 5pm sharp, not even 10 minutes longer. By 6pm, this place is completely dark.

I like the way they lit up the biggest casino in town, called the Conrad Treasury.

Well I'm the photographer, so I'm missing in "Action" again. I mean not in that picture haha. Soon after that, we walked down to a place called South Banks.

This is the place for movies, performing arts and musical shows.

But tonight we got to watch some old people shaking, and I guess the best couple will drive away a glamorous vintage car.

The folks here are pretty good with their "dances". They did salsa, tango or whatever you called it gracefully. I'm feeling quite embarrassed because I don't know how to dance.

It's getting late, so let us all go HOME ...

The evening view of Brisbane is extremely ...superb... awesome... outstanding! Though it has a smaller skyline than other bigger Australian cities, this is enough to make you amazed !

Good Night from Brisbane, Australia. See you again!

Post published on April 2. Sorry for being inconsistent lately. Happy Easter!

Harry Potter Dinner

25 March, 2007 | Written by Patchay at 9:44 AM in , ,

To friends back home ...ever wonder how my formal dinner in college looks like? If no idea, then take a closer look below.

This is a Harry Potter-like formal dinner held once every week in college dining hall. The requirement for entry: All students must wear academic gown to dine.

Joke or what? I did not hear her speak ... but laughed just like the others did. Everytime someone from college or outside will be invited to say something on stage. If I'm next what should I say?

The dinner was a big portion of beef, some sauce, potatoes and salad with bean curd. Somehow the salad taste a little weird to me ...

The formal dinner before this week's was baked lamb, mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. Hahaha ...in less than a month here I already feel bored with all these "stuffs".

OK...good bye for now!

UQ Walking Tour Part II

17 March, 2007 | Written by Patchay at 2:49 PM in ,

--- con't from Part 1

Here's some faculties a stone's throw away from my college and the lakeside area.

(clockwise) School of Molecular Biosciences; Chemistry; Joyce Ackroyd Building (next to Business School); Chemical Engineering School and Sir James Foots Building

The main building for UQ Business School is called Colin Clark. The school is one of four schools within the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law.

Wooot ...the palm trees there make Me feel ...so like home ...

Walking up these stairs aren't easy, especially under the afternoon sun. Some of my tutorials are held here, so imagine how much exercise I went through !

UQ Library is the largest in Queensland state, with over 13 branches serving all UQ campuses. But I would only use this one (Duhig Building), and it is my campus's largest library.

The main entrance to the oldest and most photographed building in this University - the Forgan Smith. But somehow it looks ugly to Me, very honestly.

This is the T C Beirne School of Law. Hahaha ... the height of those trees somehow resembles inequality. So what kind of law students would you expect lol ?

James and Mary Emelia Mayne Centre is home to the University Art Museum.

The "Great Court" lawn area is at the heart of this campus. Crowded with people during weekdays as most students chill-out here. Other activities may include reading, sunbathing, sleeping, and hopefully no sex please.

A cafe with pinkish umbrellas under a canopy near the Great Court.

The university main bus stop is located here - Chancellors' Place. The Student Centre is adjacent. So this could be one of the busiest road on campus.

Opposite the bus stop is CSIRO's major research facility in Queensland. Located within UQ's Bioscience Precinct (QBP), it houses more than 700 researchers.

I also learned that the QBP is Australia’s largest research facility dedicated to human, animal and plant biotechnological research.

Another landmark is the AIBN (Australian Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology).

It is one of Australia's primary research facility for cell and tissue culture, vascular biology, nanotech and biomaterials, microscopy analysis and cytometry, computational molecular science and blah blah blah.

Hundreds of mad scientists can be found here !!!

From AIBN, I'll take a shortcut back to my college. Crossing this cricket oval is pretty scary especially at night, but thankfully nothing had happened to me as yet. Cheers.

Wanna see more photos? Just click here Patchay UQ. Future photos will be uploaded there (as I've received lots lots of request...pls pls go there). Thank you for viewing.

--- The End

UQ Walking Tour Part I

15 March, 2007 | Written by Patchay at 8:02 PM in ,

To be presented in 2 parts, this is a walking excursion around my university - The University of Queensland at St Lucia, Brisbane, Australia.

The First Part talks about my route to UQ Centre, where my orientation welcoming ceremony was held, while the Second Part talks about the important places on campus. Have fun viewing !

A very sunny early morning indeed. The time now is 7am. Inhaling the early morning air gives me a little comfort, as I stroll towards College Road on the eastern side of Emmanuel. This route probably is the most scenic part of the university town, called St Lucia.

In just 3 minutes from College Road is the University Lake. The trees lined the walkway in an orderly manner. I can feel the tranquility almost instantly. And perhaps I'll go fishing here one day.

A majestic fountain rises above the surface of the lake. The continuous flow of water has considerably cooled the surroundings.

The other lakes nearby are somewhat smaller. Hahaha... they look like "kolam ikan" (fish ponds). And you can see birds everywhere, rubbish flies everywhere ... sigh.

This is the Eleanor Schonell Bridge, a dedicated bridge only for bus, pedestrian and cycle. Cars are prohibited. The bridge connects my university across Brisbane River to another suburb called West End.

My university is situated by the riverside. There is a "CityCat" ferry service that takes you to Brisbane downtown in just under 15 minutes.

Water-sports have never been on my mind. Or I would say that I'm totally ignorant about that sports, things like water-skiing etc. But who knows someday I'll be brave enough to try out ...

Australians love cricket and rugby. But I prefer playing soccer. I'll play soccer alongside them, and hopefully the batsman will be careful not to hit my swerving soccer ball lol !

This is my destination for today - the UQ Centre.

--- To be continued

Tagged Things

10 March, 2007 | Written by Patchay at 4:46 PM in

Rules: Each player of this game starts out by giving 6 weird things about themselves. People who get tagged need to write in a blog of their own 6 weird things as well as state the rules clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. After you do that, leave them each a comment letting them know you tagged them and to read your blog! [Courtesy of Xien]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was tagged by Xien few days back. And for no particular reason, I shall reveal 6 random (weird?) things about Me ...

1. I passed-out (diarrhea or Hokkien: lau sai) in front of an ongoing class before ! Happenned when I was in Primary Two, and if I remember correctly it was at the beginning of a new school term. ...Could be one of my most embarassing moment in my life !!!

The teacher scolded Me; and it goes something like this: "You sit outside! You stupid Boy!!!". I was thrown out of class instantly and my classmates avoided Me for weeks.

2. I used to love adding people as my contact on MSN (such a freak?). Not anymore though.

More than 350 and still counting ... ...

[Note: I don't add contacts anymore, unless invited or for important purposes.]

3. When I was small, I love memorizing facts such as the names of every country in the world etc ...

And their capital cities and even some other useless stuffs such as fish names. Crazy isn't it?

For every bookshop I visited, I would try to copy some information into my diary. Until one fine day, I was asked to "Get Out" from a bookstore in Sydney (during my first visit to Australia). Since then, I've given up almost all those stuffs ...yahhooo !

4. Some people just love to call Me using annoying nicknames. They include: "Pinky and The Brain", "Patricia", "Bull Dog", "Pet Dog", "Pat Ass", etc ... and now "Patty" in Brisbane !!!

5. I think he's VERY VERY cute !!! How about you?

Some of the ah-moh guys here in my college look very "cute" to Me. By saying he/they look cute doesn't mean anything. I'm purely straight and NOT a homosexual as claimed by some people.

6. I feel happy when I see young children imitating the acts of their favourite superhero character. And I too still watch shows like Power Rangers, Ultraman etc !

Wait, wait... let me explain. It's because I got to accompany my 7-year old nephew who watches it from CD occasionally at home.

But when I saw this picture online (courtesy of SSC), I fell in love with it instantly. I was wondering if Ultraman is coming to town ? Hahaha... anyhow I'm looking forward to watching Transformers movie later this Year !

-----

That's all for now.

My only obligation for this post is to tag another 6 random people. Their job is to write something like Me, 6 random / weird things about themselves. (Follow the rules above)

And there are: Karl Vic (something to cheer you up in Palmy), Eu Gene (thought you might like to tell Me something interesting), Suk Han (just for fun since you just started blogging), Yee Yen (for fun also), Eri Peng (need to know more about you) and Joann Choo (another tag to keep you busy XD).

Muahhahaha...good luck people !

Toga Party

02 March, 2007 | Written by Patchay at 7:15 PM in , ,

My Toga Toga on February 22 goes like this ...

The Asian + Australian-Asian gang. I was having a light flu, so pardon Me for wearing a shirt. Also... hahaha... yes I was too shy to show people my skininess.

Some people from Australia in Australia ... except Me !

The average muscular boys... but aren't they look cool here ?

The ladies trying to show something too ...sadly ended up like an Australian-style of lesbianism dancing.

"Mummy mummy, I was so horny till my underwear dropped !" Wow... close your eyes, girls !!!

A French kiss of more than 3 minutes ... and from a newly found couple ? Good luck mannn.
