The Send Off

23 February, 2007 | Written by Patchay at 5:42 PM in ,

The day that I've been waiting for years had finally arrived ! Yahhooo ... ...

At 9.10am on 17 February, I boarded a Malaysia Airlines direct flight to Brisbane, Australia. But I never thought I'll be there for the next two years instead of Melbourne, ...never mind then. Still new experience for Me, right ?

My family bidding Me farewell

And it was on the eve of Chinese New Year that I've to leave my family and friends already sob...sob... Haha...can't "pai nian" with you all and no more "ang pow" (red packet) for Me. Zero income this New Year !

Sarah Jane, Me and John

Would like to thank my cell leader, Sarah; and John and Karen (not in picture) for coming all the way to KLIA this early morning to say Goodbye to Me. Keep in touch ok !

I also thank all friends who brought Me out for some makan-makan prior to my departure. Wishing you guys and girls Happy Chinese New Year and Happy Holidays !!!

Here's a brief musing for 2006 on a quarterly basis. The photos below have been either posted before on this blog or have not. Most photos here have been taken using my best pet of the year, that is my personal Canon Ixus. Have fun reading my craps ... and thanks a lot !

January - March

Chinese New Year 2006 "Open House"

The first quarter of 2006 was truly amazing. A new chapter began as I meander my way from the front gate to the university lecture hall. It was the time when self-learning became a norm. While studying, new friendships were fast established.

I had my first outing of the year with the young adults from my church. Thereafter, invitations to specially organized Recognition Events came like a pouring rain non-stop. Being a trainee distributor for a well-established multi-level marketing company, I attended most of their grandiose events which were held in huge public places such as Stadium Putra and KL's Putra World Trade Centre.

The photos that show a good beginning

Chinese New Year celebrations in 2006 was different than before as my relatives came to town instead of me having to balik kampung (going back to hometown). In the blink of an eye, I began to enjoy live-on-stage performing arts after watching a spectacular percussion performance.

April - June

Colours of Stars

The buzz during the first quarter did not stop there. Its just getting bigger and hotter. From an eye-catching fashion show to many magnificent concerts, and from Jaclyn Victor to pop diva Ruth Sahanaya and to sensational singer Wang Lee Hom of Taiwan, never before my heart was pumping like a big bass drum. On 18 June, I witnessed a historical celebration with more than 40,000 attendees in Stadium Bukit Jalil.

The photos that say the best

Mountain resort tours also became part of my life this quarter. The cool air from the densely populated tropics was very much sought after. The reason for this is the increasing intensity of stress due to assignment datelines and semester final examinations. Yet I started blogging and wasted a great deal of my precious study time pointing my computer mouse here and there.

July - September

Monash Ball Royale Escapade 2006

"What would you say to a Tiger ... Beer?" The first few words I uttered in persuading a girl to be my prom date LoL. Sounds funny but seriously things could have been worst for me. The bright side is that I was still able to have some fun with my uni-mates that royale evening.

The Photos Worth Remembering

Somewhere past the half year mark and I was still pampering myself with great pomp and show. Almost every night I went out till late with friends or even with strangers whom I now call them "new friends". I was about to neglect my studies. But I told myself that I wanted to have the best of both worlds - academic and the outside world. Hesitantly, I stood up for my future and walked my talk. From that day onwards, I went back to uni with all my written notes.

October - December

Saturday Night Fever ... Was I drunk?

October month was pretty boring. Literally everyday I sat near the table with a textbook on hand. Last exam of the year began on Hari Raya week and ended on the second day of November. My routine changed dramatically after that. The boringness slowly subsided and the party maracas began sounding again, starting with Saturday Night Fever at The Loft.

The photos that speak a million words

My year-end camp was a blast. This year's Christmas Musical Drama was again a touching one. The euphoria of Christmas was shared in Singapore with my cousins. One of whom got married recently. Last but not least, I celebrated the end of 2006 and the dawn of a new year with a "Bang" !

The New Year Jump !

This year will be more challenging. I'll begin my studies in Australia, a place I considered far from home. There, I hope to make new friends and become a self-independent student who can excel in all spheres.

Note: Post published today, January 22. Shoutout: If you're a Malaysian youth blogger, you're invited to join me at the Bloggers Meet-up. Click here for more info.

Christmas Season

02 January, 2007 | Written by Patchay at 11:01 PM in

Once again every year, I celebrated Christmas with my Cell mates! Malaysians, Koreans and the Botswanas come together again to sing, play and have dinner. The feeling of joy filled all our hearts that night.

Tradition took its place again. Like before, we exchanged our presents by playing a game called "Dirty Santa". The game was more than selecting the best present for ourselves ... it was tricky and heart-stomping! In the end, I got an IKEA wall clock. Nothing great though, but I was happy enough to sing Christmas Carols (in my heart) all night long LOL!

This was Sensational Christmas Party, specially organized for the Young Adults of Glad Tidings Youth Church. By looking at those plates, you would probably feel very hungry now!

Staged on 22 December at GTPJ, the Windows Christmas Musical was a show not to be missed. [All pics taken from Nick Tay's the-reflector.] Below is a brief synopsis of the show:

Sight brings to Lisa a battle of emotions and dreams that cost her everything in life. Unable to find happiness, she realizes that true sight only comes when God's light breaks through her windows of darkness.

Me with a cap, sitting next to Victor and Jordan both visiting my church for the first time.

This bring to an end on what I did this Christmas season. Hope you enjoyed your Christmas celebrations too =)

H.U.G.E. Camp Part I

17 December, 2006 | Written by Patchay at 10:17 PM in ,

December is the month of happenings ... the biggest event so far this month was Youth Alive Malaysia's H.U.G.E. Camp 2006.

H.U.G.E. stands for "Have U Got Enuf". This year's H.U.G.E. was aptly themed "SOLD". The point is: "Are you sold to the world, or all sold out for Jesus?"

From December 11 to 14, the Melaka Watercity Resort in Ayer Keroh was the place where hundreds of young people from around Malaysia gathered to sing praises and have fun together.

The campsite was really spectacular. The wooden galley above is a replica of a Portuguese ship during Malacca's colonial days. The resort is surrounded by a huge man-made lake. Getting to and fro the resort lobby and my apartment could not be better than crossing a rope suspension bridge that hung across the lake. We can even go kayaking and go-karting during free times !!!

This is the latest style of ushering people into the hall. Get ready to bend your body and enter the tunnel ! More like a mouse entering a mouse hole. :)

Imagine for every night there, we had a totally exhilarating concert! The worship led by the Psallo Band from Indonesia was simply awesome! We were truly mesmerized by their performance. ...Jump ! Jump ! Jump !

2nd day: Good morning everyone...

The main speaker was Rev. Mike Pilavachi from England, who also founded a youth organization called Soul Survivor. And he was always humorous, jovial and cool...

The pastors including Ps. Clement Wong and Ps. Julie Khoo (from my church) showed many good talents. Rev. Mike tried to sing a Beetles song, Ps. Julie danced her way on stage, cheered by all campers alike LOL!

Me and the Botswanians

"Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head." (Matthew 8:20) Huh??? Yes, it was the most entertaining sermon throughout the camp !

To be continued...

September Ends

05 October, 2006 | Written by Patchay at 12:38 AM in ,

Paradise and GTians

The Paradise Concert was held on the 24th of September 2006. Here's a recap. This year's attendance was a bit dissapointing though. Perhaps it was probably due to the absence of Guy Sebastian, the "crowd puller" for last year's concert. The Paradise Team led the worship and sang their hearts out, at the same time managed to entertain the mainly youth congregation with songs from their latest album, Set Me Free and some other popular songs from their previous albums. All in all, it was a wonderful worship experience and I guessed many first-time visitors were impressed by the sounds effects at my church.

Birthday Ice-cream and Cheese Cake

Happy Birthday to my cell mate, Deniece. It could have been a surprise birthday supper for Deniece on the 28th, but somehow she managed to know about it through a SMS containing a message notifying us about the surprised outing which was sent to her accidentally. So, I went out as usual to celebrate with other cell members at Baskin Robbins Mont Kiara. There, I tried a single scoop strawberry chesse flavoured ice-cream (sounds weird?) with additional request for some fresh strawberry add-ons. Fingers licking good ice-cream with good taste. How I wish I could make such ice-cream at school (I mean university) for my girlfriends and female friends at school. No doubt, girls will surely like this for supper. Aren't you now wanting something for supper tonight?

Me and William

The next morning was a different story. I went out for lunch with a former high-school mate William, a hospitality student at Taylor's College and with another friend of his. We were "hooked" together at The Curve, where we had lunch at the Hooked Restaurant and were "hooked" up with affordable set lunches. Heard of Spaghetti Bolognese or Cabonarra with Fish and Cheese? Oh no, no taste according to William's friend. This is one restaurant where you can try Fish with almost everything? If I'm the chef one day, perhaps, I will try mixing Cheese, Fish and Papaya or Durian (as opposed to pineapple) served with fried rice. Yuccksss to my bizarre ideas! What you think of this combination? I really can't stop laughing right now.

Paradise Live: Set Me Free

23 September, 2006 | Written by Patchay at 11:07 PM in ,

Yuhhoo...The Paradise Team is coming back to Malaysia. And again at (my church) Glad Tidings Petaling Jaya at Section 13. The Paradise Christian Worship Team will be led by Matt Heins and Ollie Sebastian, brother of first Australian Idol Guy Sebastian (apparently will not be coming this year). This time, they will be performing new songs from their latest album, Set Me Free.

This not to be missed concert will be held on the 24th of September, Sunday; 7.00pm sharp. Oh yeah...the entrance is absolutely FREE. All are invited. Come enjoy and see you there!!!

Here are some glimpse of last year's concert :-

Talk@bout Sept 17

20 September, 2006 | Written by Patchay at 12:41 AM in

Bye Bye Two Friends

Another farewell? Yes...the above photo taken after a talk show.

Christien, his wife Lavin, Ps Julie and Linda Khoo

I attended this week's Talk Show, in which popular NTV7 celebrities Christien & Lavin (also former Miss Malaysia runner-up) shared on an exciting topic concerning "Temptations in the Entertainment World". Here's what they have to say, quoted and sourced from GT Youth during the approx. 45 minutes interview.

In the opening, Lavin said that "it is part of the industry which you must be prepared to handle, and only God can give you wisdom to face each circumstance."

Christien added that "pray, pray, pray, until something happens, praying with each other strengthens our (your) relationship."

On their upcoming second child, Lavin expressed that "this was a real test for our (the couple's) faith especially with a high chance of fetul deformity as a result of the medication...this baby is really God's gift."

On the recent "scandal" rumors in the local media, Lavin confidently responded "God has given us a sense of peace and calmness in all situations and through His word has provided us with much wisdom."

To draw a meaningful conclusion, these words tell us that we must continue to trust Lord and persistently walk in our faith; and by doing so He will help us to overcome any 'temptations' and challenges in our lives.

*** Next week, watch out for my upcoming Monash Ball Royale Escapade (at Palace of Golden Horses) photo post.

Unlimited Me

16 September, 2006 | Written by Patchay at 1:31 AM in , , ,

Recent unpublished pics...Hahaha...enjoy!!!

Me, Andrew, Baqthier and Sze Hoong

New Friends, New Friends!!! On Merdeka eve, I met these nice guys..."all of sudden". Hahaha...Well, it was a meet-up for Malaysian forumers from SkyscraperCity.Com, arguably the world's largest real estate forum with more than 57,000 members representing different countries all over the world. Remember, Patchay was an active forumer there? Remember now then, at least for "Countdown 2020" Malaysia section (see right-sidebar Avenue [P]). Cheers.

Sadly, out of the hundreds or thousands of Malaysian members...only these few "managed" to turn up that night. We had dinner, walked around and...(speechless). It was a very crowded day at KLCC indeed. There was an organized concert with some Akademi Fantasia celebs on stage and a Merdeka rally organized by UMNO Youth. (Phew...so dangerous when we walked pass these people). Along the way, I even witnessed some stunt acts by the so-called "Mat Rempit" gang as they raced dangerously on city roads at midnight. All in all, we enjoyed ourselves, evidently shown by our smiles above. We departed after watching the magnificent fireworks (see The Spirit of Merdeka post) to Steven's at Taman OUG, where we hangout until 4.00am.

Me, Tim, Harrison and Ji Wi

RLC Movers & Shakers Concert with the PlanetShakers Team from Queensland, Australia. That night, we had a wonderful concert and we were all touched by the powerful message.

Goodbye Sean Park (4th from right)

We bid farewell to our cellmate from South Korea. He went back to serve his country in the National Service. He will always be remembered as a good friend, and of course the "Korean Mafia" game that he taught us how to play. Bang! Bang! Who is the Mafia! 안녕히계세요! (Angyeonghi gaseyo - Goodbye)

Joe, Daniel, Chan Jin and Me

Farewell to old buddy, Joel Soon. Picture taken when we were having lunch in Pizza Evo at TheCurve.

Sometime ago...

My first Monash buddies BBQ gathering, held at William's condominium. Ooops...everyone here is pointing fingers at "Gay Bing". Never mind the scandal, it has no importance at all.

A Happy Note

17 August, 2006 | Written by Patchay at 11:04 PM in

Happy - that is how I feel after I heard about this. Apparently, Patchay@Blogspot was featured in the newspaper last Thursday, August 10?? Sadly, I did not even have a chance to look at it. I was told by friends that an interesting article related to blogging among youth in Malaysia appeared in the college/youth section called R.AGE of the daily Star newspaper. For sure prior to that, I was asked for permission to publish my blog and I was interviewed via email by a reporter from TheStar.

Cell Harvest

What happened? Earthquake Struck!

On the night of August 11, it was "Cell Harvest". Most of the time, we sat around in the living room playing some ice-breakers while chatting with each other. The food served this evening was simply awesome. We ate our meal slowly, savouring every mouthful. All in all, we enjoyed ourselves and this fellowship once again brought all of us from various backgrounds closer again.

MV Doulos Last Sunday

27 July, 2006 | Written by Patchay at 4:23 PM in

I visited MV Doulos at Star Cruises Terminal, Port Klang (Malaysia) on 23 July 2006. Built in 1914 (2 years younger than the Titanic!), Doulos is recognised in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest active ocean-going passenger ship.

MV Doulos at Port Klang

The Ramblings --- My first impression of this ship was: Gosh! It isn't that big after all! It looks more like a frigate or destroyer or something like that?...lol. Also, I was wondering what in the world is that huge white ball thingy "hanging" on the upper deck of the ship. Isn't it a radar system?

I and of course hundreds more waited in a long long not moving queue before we could get onboard the ship. Some people waited for more than 3 hours (during weekends mah) and guess what happened when it was about their turn to be on the ship? Astonishingly, they turned back and headed to the carpark. Reason: Too hot. The last thing I knew when I got out of the ship was that I had 4 new books under my arms.

Thousands of people lined up under this structure

A bit of History --- The original ship was renamed Doulos after which she was purchased in 1977 by Gute Bücher für Alle e.V. (Good Books for All), a private, non-profit and charitable organisation based in Germany. Since 1977, the ship has travelled to more than 100 countries, welcoming more than 18 million people onboard.

The modern Doulos is now home to the world's largest floating book fair and being acknowledged as the ship of Knowledge, Help, Hope and (also) Unity.

As usual, I'm the photographer...

The Truth --- Staffed by over 300 volunteers representing almost every part of the world, Doulos carries a goodwill message to all ports that she visits. Besides supplying more than 6,000 quality literature titles across many great oceans, the ship continues to promote good understanding between different cultures and (at the same time) sharing a message of hope in God wherever there is opportunity.

Fraser's Hill Outing

07 July, 2006 | Written by Patchay at 8:14 PM in ,

Fraser...Fraser Hill (Fraser or Fraser's?), here I come.... Did we sung any Hillsongs? Anyway, on the 26th of June twenty-eight of us went to Fraser's Hill, Pahang, Malaysia, and we stayed there for three days and two nights. It was a relaxing excursion with many pleasant memories and wonderful experiences as well.

After what seemed to be a tiring, dizzying (such word?) and scary (especially the narrow road along the cliff) ride because of the long winding road, I finally reached the secluded, typical English-looking town at around 2.00pm. Immediately after we arrived, we checked into our rented bungalow. The weather here was fine and thankfully it did not rain heavily throughout our stay.

We've arrived, but I'm missing!

Our first dinner came (we went for it actually!) around 7.00pm. We went out to eat at a small Chinese restaurant (kopitiam). We decided to stroll from the bungalow where we're staying to "Downtown" Fraser, where the kopitiam was located. To my disappointment, there was only a row of convenient shops plus a couple of unknown low-rise buildings around the main square - that's what people called it "Downtown" (Signboard: Pusat Bandar Fraser). Undeniably, the only masterpiece here is a clock tower standing majestically in the middle of the square.

For two consecutive nights after dinner we travelled to and fro the same kopitiam with our foot. The roads and pathways here are generally clean and evenly paved, although they were literally "carved out" from the dense tropical jungle. The night-walk back after dinner was a joy to behold. As we turned our heads upward, the stars, perhaps constellations of millions of miles away could be distinctly seen in the black sky. Here in Fraser's Hill, far away from the glare of the city lights, the universe was clearly visible!

Chop Chilli Chop!!! That was one of the game that we played for ice-breakers. Hahaha...we also managed to watch some World Cup games (everyday!!!) aired Live via satellite to our main television set in the living hall. After one game, we all fell asleep and went to bed at our respective rooms. I lay back on my bed, breathing in the cool night air and listening to the cries of insects. As usual, the mosquitoes were never my friends but this time I never seemed bothered by them at all. Too tired or dreaming or what? In the night, we had our windows opened because our rooms (as in mine) didn't have any fans or air-cons. In the afternoon, we had our windows closed because we are scared of thefts.

The most exciting part of our trip is to the Jeriau Waterfall. In fact, there was nothing much to do there, besides taking photos...hahaha. The waterfall is just right in the background!

Water play...

The boys posing...

All girls group

The Monashians

We had our last picture overlooking the Titiwangsa Mountain Range that forms the backbone of Peninsular Malaysia.

All united
